Sustainability and environmental preservation are the heart and soul of Babcock Ranch, a master planned community straddling the border of Charlotte and Lee Counties in Southwest Florida. At 18,000 acres, only half of that is being built out with 19,500 homes and six million square feet of commercial and civic space, and only in the areas where they will have the least impact to the natural environment. The remainder is being preserved as greenways, lakes, parks and over 50 miles of trails for residents to connect with nature, as well as expansive corridors for wildlife. An integrated surface water management system, including filter marshes and rain gardens, provides watershed protection and flood control. The community has its own water treatment and sewage treatment plants, using reclaimed water for irrigation purposes. Babcock Ranch has very much succeeded in making green living effortless, proving that a community can exist in harmony with its surroundings without sacrificing lifestyle.
